At Brabham Primary School, we are committed to continuous growth and learning in culturally responsive and restorative practices. We hold a shared belief that this journey is infinite.
At Brabham Primary School our vision is grounded in the belief that education is a pathway to reconciliation, empowerment, and social justice. By creating a school environment where Aboriginal families feel culturally safe, heard, and seen, we aim to build stronger connections, foster mutual respect, and promote positive outcomes for all members of our community.
Cultural safety permeates every aspect of Brabham Primary school life, from the curriculum to the physical environment. Aboriginal perspectives, histories, and knowledges are integrated into teaching practices, ensuring that students see themselves reflected in their learning experiences. Language, kinship, and cultural practices are honoured and embraced, fostering a sense of belonging for Aboriginal families within the school community.
In 2023, the Cultural Responsive Team recognised that Aboriginal learners have a long history of underrepresentation in gifted and talented (G&T) education. This led to the development of a co-constructed both-ways model to identify gifted and talented students within our school – the Kwobidak Moorditj Koolanga’s meaning Beautiful Strong Children.
The team worked to recognise and support cultural gifts, whilst at the same time ensuring the forms of giftedness valued by education are also nurtured. This means that activities valued as traditional gifts and talents such as (but not limited to) ceremony, traditional dance and music, general cultural knowledge, land and biodiversity knowledge and leadership may be harnessed to support the cultural and spiritual life of the community. The structure of the program was informed by the community, after our cultural advisors hosted informal yarns to develop a locally relevant, co-constructed model. After this collaboration the program was designed to target a range of sporting related skills including fitness, as well as aiming to develop positive behaviours, such as goal setting, resilience, leadership and healthy eating habits.
